PBoC is expected to set USD/CNY mid-point at 6.6813 (Prev. 6.7208)

What it means

A firmer expected mid-point relative to the prior fix signals the PBoC leaning into yuan strength, or at minimum not resisting it, through the daily fixing mechanism. The fix matters less for its level than for its signal: the band around it defines where onshore spot can trade that session, and the gap between the modelled estimate and the actual fix has historically been the cleaner read on official intent, since a persistently stronger-than-modelled fix in past episodes has pointed to smoothing against depreciation pressure and vice versa. Episodes of sustained yuan appreciation through the fixing have tended to run alongside broad dollar softness, and a firmer fix has typically fed through to the offshore CNH spread and to regional Asian FX that trades as a CNY proxy block. The distinction worth drawing is between the PBoC simply tracking dollar moves, which leaves CNY stable against the basket, and actively steering stronger, which shows up in the CFETS basket level. The follow-ons are the actual fix versus this estimate, the direction of the onshore-offshore spread, and whether state bank dollar selling appears in the onshore session, which has been the usual tell that the move has official backing rather than just market flow.
