Context

The daily mid-point is the PBoC's primary signalling instrument, and the market reads it less as a level than as a statement of intent: a fix notably firmer than models imply is taken as resistance to depreciation, while one in line with estimates is read as tolerance for market-driven moves. A stronger fix than the previous session, as flagged here, implies the onshore band centres at a firmer level, which typically caps USD/CNH upside and can spill into regional Asia FX through the CFETS basket linkage. The distinction worth drawing is between a firmer fix that merely tracks dollar moves in the basket and one that deviates from the counter-cyclical framework, the latter being the stronger policy signal. The follow-ons are the gap versus modelled estimates, the fixings over subsequent sessions for persistence, the state banks' onshore activity as the enforcement arm, and offshore CNH basis relative to spot CNY. As a routine daily operation rather than a policy change, the read is directional only.
