Context

The daily midpoint is the PBoC's clearest routine signalling channel, and the signal here is a materially firmer CNY fixing relative to the prior day's reference, a fixing level on the stronger side of the round-number threshold that markets have historically treated as a line of official tolerance. The sequence that matters is the comparison between the modelled expectation and the actual print: a fix set firmer than the countercyclical-adjusted estimate has conventionally been read as resistance to depreciation pressure, while a fix set weaker than modelled has been read as accommodation, and the gap between the two has at times been the story itself. A firmer fix pulls the onshore spot band's centre with it and tends to lift the offshore rate more than proportionally when positioning is short, with the CNH-CNY spread the cleanest tell of whether the move is being accepted or faded. The follow-ons are the state bank presence in the onshore session, the trajectory of the fix over consecutive days, since single firmer prints have meant little without persistence, and the broad dollar backdrop, as fixing policy in past episodes of this kind has tracked the trade-weighted yuan rather than the bilateral rate alone. As a managed regime, direction here is set by intent rather than flow.
