Context

The daily mid-point is the PBoC's principal signalling instrument for the currency: the onshore rate may trade only within a band around the fix, so where the fixing is set relative to the prior close and, more importantly, relative to what models imply from overnight dollar moves is read as a statement of intent. A firmer fix than the previous session, as here, points to a preference for a stronger yuan, but the established tell is the gap between the actual fix and market-model consensus rather than the fix versus the prior number. In past episodes of sustained depreciation pressure the Bank has repeatedly fixed stronger than models through prolonged stretches, a pattern associated with the countercyclical factor in the fixing formula and with state-bank dollar selling onshore. The follow-ons are the onshore spot's position within the band, the CNY-CNH spread as a gauge of offshore pressure versus onshore management, and any change in the dollar leg that would test how much of the move is yuan-specific versus broad dollar. The Japan and UK tags are incidental here; the channel runs through the dollar-yuan cross and the regional FX complex that trades off it.
