Context
A materially firmer fix of this size against the prior mid-point is the PBoC's standard signal of intent: the daily fixing anchors the band within which spot may trade, so a stronger mid-point both resets the day's range and tells the market where the authorities want the currency. Episodes of sustained stronger-than-model fixings have historically marked periods of official resistance to depreciation pressure, often reinforced by state bank dollar selling in the onshore session; the read across to CNH and the onshore-offshore spread is the usual tell for how hard the guidance is being defended. The distinction worth drawing is between a fix that merely tracks broad dollar weakness (in which case CNY is stable on a basket basis) and one that is strong against consensus models, which signals active leaning against the move. The follow-ons are the CFETS basket direction, any adjustment to reserve or forward requirements, and whether spot actually follows the fix or pins at the weak side of the band. As a daily operational input rather than a policy decision, the signal is in the pattern of consecutive fixings, not any single print.
