Context

A materially stronger daily mid-point, with the fix set lower in USD/CNY terms than the prior session, is the PBoC's standard signalling device: the fixing, not the close, is where the authorities state their preferred level, and the onshore band around it defines how far spot can travel in the session. A sequence of stronger fixes has historically been read as resistance to depreciation pressure, whether from a firmer dollar, capital outflow, or trade-weighted considerations; the counter-scenario, where the fix tracks the dollar index passively, tends to coincide with quieter CNY management. The tell in episodes of this kind is the gap between the modelled fixing expectation and the actual print: a stronger-than-modelled fix implies deliberate lean against depreciation, while one in line with models implies neutrality. Follow-ons worth noting are the offshore CNH spread against onshore CNY, which widens when the market fights the fix, and the trajectory of the CFETS basket rather than the bilateral rate alone, since the PBoC has tended to manage the basket more than the dollar pair. Whether the fix is matched by state bank activity in the spot market is the usual confirmation.
