PBoC is expected to set USD/CNY mid-point at 6.7093 (prev. 6.7807)

A materially stronger mid-point relative to the prior fix is the channel through which the PBoC signals its tolerance for appreciation, since the onshore band is anchored to the fix rather than to where spot closed.

Context

The read that matters is the gap between the modelled fix and the actual one: a fix set stronger than consensus estimates has historically been the tell that the authorities are leaning against depreciation pressure or capital outflow, while a fix in line with models reads as passive. Episodes of sustained stronger-side fixes have tended to pull CNH toward the onshore rate and to weigh on the broad dollar at the margin, given the CNY's weight in Asia FX baskets and the correlation of regional peers to the fix. The follow-ons are the state bank presence in the onshore session, the CFETS basket direction, and whether the stronger fixing persists across consecutive days, since a single fix is noise and a run of them is policy. Offshore-forward spreads and the CNH-CNY basis are the usual early markers of whether the market treats the signal as credible.
