A firmer mid-point of this size, if confirmed against models, fits the pattern in which the PBoC leans against depreciation pressure through the fixing rather than through outright intervention: the daily reference rate sets the centre of the onshore band, so its level relative to consensus models is read as the policy signal, not the level itself. In past episodes of sustained pressure the sequence has typically run from a string of stronger-than-modelled fixings, to changes in the counter-cyclical factor, to tightening of offshore liquidity or forward reserve requirements, and only then to heavier measures; a single strong fix is the first rung. The distinction worth drawing is between a fix that merely tracks a broad dollar move and one that deviates from modelled estimates, since only the latter carries intent. Follow-ons historically watched are the subsequent fixings for persistence, the onshore-offshore spread as a gauge of pressure, and any state-bank activity in the spot market. As an expectation rather than the published fix, the note remains provisional until the actual print.
