Context

The daily fix is the PBoC's primary signalling instrument for the currency, and a mid-point set materially stronger than the previous day's, as flagged here, reads as a deliberate steer rather than a passive reflection of overnight dollar moves. In past episodes, gaps of this size between successive fixes have tended to mark either an attempt to lean against depreciation pressure and damp one-way positioning, or an accommodation of genuine dollar weakness, and the distinction is read off the fixing's relationship to the modelled consensus rather than its level. A fix consistently stronger than sell-side projections has historically been the tell of official discomfort with CNY softness, transmitting through the onshore spot's permitted trading band and into CNH, with the offshore-onshore spread the usual pressure gauge. The follow-ons are the state bank presence in the onshore session, the daily fix sequence over the coming week, and the broad dollar backdrop given the fix's mechanical link to the prior session's DXY move. This is an expected rather than confirmed print, so the signal is conditional until the actual setting crosses.
