PBoC is expected to set USD/CNY mid-point at 6.7208 (prev. 6.7840)
The daily fix is the PBoC's primary signalling instrument for the yuan, anchoring the onshore trading band and, through it, the offshore CNH basis. A mid-point set materially firmer than the prior close of the fixing range is the pattern desks read as resistance to depreciation pressure: in past episodes of sustained fix-on-the-strong-side-of-model behaviour, the sequence has been persistent counter-cyclical adjustment, wider CNH-CNY gaps during stress, and eventually administrative follow-through if pressure persists. The distinction that matters is whether a stronger fix reflects genuine dollar softness overnight, which the fixing formula mechanically passes through, or a discretionary lean against market direction, since only the latter carries policy signal. The tells are the size and persistence of the gap between the fix and where models project it, the state of the CNH forward curve, and whether state bank selling of dollars appears in the onshore session. Serial pattern over consecutive days, not any single print, is what has historically distinguished smoothing from a line in the sand.
