Context

The daily fixing is the PBoC's primary signalling instrument: it anchors the onshore trading band and is read less for its level than for its deviation from models built on the prior close and the overnight dollar move. An expected fix firmer than the previous one fits the standard pattern of the Bank leaning against depreciation pressure, and in past episodes of this kind the tell has been a persistent gap between the actual fix and the modelled consensus, since a sustained countercyclical bias, not a single day's print, signals intent. The distinction worth drawing is between a fix that merely tracks a softer dollar and one that is deliberately set stronger than the basket implies; the former is mechanical, the latter is policy. Where the fix matters beyond the spot rate is through the offshore spread, with CNH tending to converge toward the onshore signal, and through the regional peer set, where Asian currencies have historically taken their cue from the direction of the CNY band. The follow-ons are the state bank behaviour around the fix, the offshore-forward points as a gauge of funding pressure, and whether the bias persists across consecutive sessions. As a daily administrative setting rather than a policy decision, the signal is directional and incremental.
