Tour the PlatformThe daily midpoint is the PBoC's primary signalling instrument, and the informative content sits less in the level than in the gap between the modelled fixing and the prior close: a materially stronger fixing than consensus estimates has historically been read as resistance to depreciation pressure, while a fixing in line with models is treated as acquiescence to market direction. A firmer midpoint of this size, set against a weaker fix the prior day, tightens the band within which onshore spot can trade and leans against any building USD/CNY topside momentum, with offshore CNH typically the first place the signal gets tested. Episodes of repeated counter-market fixings have tended to precede heavier tools, from tweaks to the countercyclical factor to verbal intervention and state bank dollar selling, so the pattern across consecutive fixings matters more than any single print. The follow-ons are whether the fixings persist in this direction, where spot closes relative to the band edges, and whether state banks appear in the onshore afternoon session. The broader dollar backdrop and the CFETS basket remain the constraints on how far the PBoC can lean against the move without depleting credibility or reserves.
