PBoC is expected to set USD/CNY mid-point at 6.7480 (prev. 6.7917)
What it means
A firmer mid-point than the previous fix is the routine daily signal through which the PBoC steers the renminbi: the onshore pair trades within a band around the fix, so the setting itself frames the day's permissible range rather than the close. The distinction that matters is whether the fix tracks the prior session's spot move and the overnight dollar leg, in which case it is mechanical, or whether it leans against them, which is how the authorities have historically signalled discomfort with the pace of depreciation or appreciation. A stronger fix after a firmer close is the benign case; a stronger fix against a weaker close would be the tell. Past episodes of sustained fixing bias in one direction have tended to precede shifts in reserve data, state-bank dollar flows and commentary, and eventually capital-flow management measures when the pressure persisted. Worth watching is the gap between fix and modelled expectations, the behaviour of the offshore CNH spread against the onshore rate, and whether the bias repeats across consecutive sessions rather than appearing as a one-off. As a single data point the signal is weak; the pattern across the week is what has carried information in comparable cycles.
