PBoC is expected to set USD/CNY mid-point at 6.7548 (prev. 6.7895)
The daily mid-point is the PBoC's principal signalling instrument for the currency: onshore spot trades within a fixed band around it, so the fix itself, and especially its deviation from the modelled consensus, carries more information than any single session's price action. A lower USD/CNY fix relative to the previous day implies a stronger yuan setting; the tell that has historically mattered is whether the fix comes in firmer or weaker than sell-side estimates, since a persistent gap between the two has been the standard read on official intent, through the countercyclical factor and verbal guidance in past episodes of depreciation pressure. In comparable stretches, runs of consecutive firmer-than-expected fixes have tended to slow a weakening trend rather than reverse it, while fixes in line with models have been treated as acquiescence to market direction. The follow-ons are the pattern across successive days rather than the one print, offshore CNH's spread to the onshore rate as a gauge of how far the fix is leaning against positioning, and whether state bank flows in the onshore session corroborate the signal. The dollar backdrop remains the other half of the pair, so a stronger fix against a broadly firm dollar reads differently from one set into dollar weakness.
