Context

The daily fix is the PBoC's primary signalling channel: the pair trades within a band around it, so a mid-point set materially weaker than the modelled consensus is read as deliberate rather than mechanical. Historically the signal lies in the gap versus estimate, not the level: a sustained run of fixes weaker than models predict has tended to mark official tolerance for depreciation, while repeated stronger-than-expected fixes signal resistance. A single day's deviation close to the prior fix, as here, fits the pattern of managed drift rather than a step devaluation, which in past episodes has been telegraphed by an abrupt, outsized reset of the mid-point. The transmission runs through offshore CNH, where the onshore-offshore spread is the classic tell of whether the market is leaning against the fixing, and through the CFETS basket, which shows whether the move is CNY-specific or simply dollar strength passing through. Worth watching is the sequence over coming sessions: persistence of weaker-than-model fixes, any widening of the CNH-CNY gap, and state bank dollar selling in the onshore session as evidence of smoothing. Countercyclical factor adjustments and verbal guidance from officials are the usual follow-ons when the bank wants to push back.
