Context

The daily fix is the PBoC's primary signalling instrument for the currency, and the signal here sits in the gap between the mid-point and the modelled consensus rather than in the level itself. A fixing set weaker than expectations, even one marginally stronger than the prior day's, has historically been read as the authorities tolerating depreciation pressure rather than leaning hard against it; the countercyclical factor exists precisely to narrow that gap, and its visible absence or undersizing is the tell. The mechanism runs through the trading band around the mid-point: a weaker fix resets the range in which spot can trade, so the follow-through is where spot opens relative to the fix and whether state banks appear at the edges. Episodes of this kind have tended to cluster when the dollar is broadly firm, and the fixing pattern over consecutive sessions, rather than any single print, is what separates passive accommodation from an active preference. The calendar items are the subsequent fixes, any shift in the spread between onshore and offshore rates, and whether the gap against consensus persists or closes.
