Context

The daily midpoint is the PBoC's primary steering instrument: the onshore band trades around it, and a fix set materially weaker than the modelled consensus (the fixing is calculated off the prior close, the basket and a discretionary counter-cyclical factor) is read as the authorities either leaning against appreciation pressure or signalling tolerance for depreciation. The distinction that matters is whether the deviation from consensus persists across consecutive sessions; a one-off gap tends to be dismissed as model noise, while a run of fixes on the same side of estimates has historically preceded a shift in the permitted trading range and, in episodes of stress, broader capital outflow pressure. The prior-form question is the counter-cyclical factor itself, which has been activated and withdrawn in past cycles precisely when the fix diverged systematically from where the basket and close implied it should sit. Worth watching are the onshore close relative to the fix, the offshore CNH spread against CNY as a gauge of whether the market is front-running the signal, and any accompanying liquidity operations or state-bank dollar selling that would confirm the direction of official intent. As a signal, a single weaker-than-modelled fix is directional but low conviction; the sequence is what carries the information.
