The daily fix is the PBoC's principal signalling channel, and the informative comparison is the gap against consensus rather than the level itself: a mid-point set weaker than the modelled expectation indicates the authorities are accommodating depreciation pressure rather than resisting it with countercyclical adjustment. On this occasion the fix is still firmer than the prior session's, so the signal is two-sided, tolerance of a weaker yuan relative to where forecasters pitched it, but a modest step back from the previous day's setting. In past episodes, persistent runs of weaker-than-expected fixings have been read as sanctioning gradual depreciation, while repeated stronger-than-expected fixings have marked defence of a level, and it is the sequence over consecutive sessions, not any single print, that has carried the signal. The transmission runs through the permitted trading band around the fix, offshore CNH basis against onshore CNY, and the regional FX complex that takes its cue from the yuan. The follow-ons worth noting are whether the gap versus estimate persists in coming sessions and whether state bank dollar selling appears onshore, the usual tell that tolerance has limits.
