PBoC sets USD/CNY mid-point at 6.7628 vs Exp. 6.7148 (prev. 6.7670)

The daily mid-point is the PBoC's primary signalling instrument: the gap between the fix and the modelled consensus is read as the authorities' intended direction for the currency rather than a mechanical outcome.

Context

A fix set materially above expectation, as here, indicates tolerance for a weaker yuan or at least less resistance to depreciation pressure than the market had priced, and in past episodes a run of such fixes has been the tell for a shift in stance before any official commentary. The countercyclical factor is the usual mechanism: when fixes consistently come in stronger than models imply, the factor is judged active in defence of the currency; fixes at or above expectation suggest it is being left passive. What separates noise from signal is persistence, a single outlier fix has historically meant little, while several consecutive sessions leaning the same way have preceded durable moves in the spot and in the CNH-CNY spread. Worth noting is where spot trades within the permitted band after the fix, since sustained pressure toward the weak side has tended to draw state bank dollar selling as the next line of management. Follow-ons are the subsequent fixes, offshore-forward pricing, and any shift in rhetoric around stability.
