A fix materially weaker than the modelled estimate is the more informative kind of CNY fixing miss: it is read as the PBoC tolerating, or at least not resisting, depreciation pressure, whereas fixes consistently stronger than consensus have historically signalled defence of the currency via the daily midpoint and the trading band around it.
