PBoC sets USD/CNY mid-point at 6.7743 vs Exp. 6.7174 (prev. 6.7766)

A fix materially weaker than expectation is read as official tolerance for depreciation, with the countercyclical factor apparently not deployed to resist market pressure; a fix stronger than consensus signals the opposite, and episodes of sustained stronger-than-expected fixings have historically marked the point at which authorities lean against a weakening trend. The fix also sets the boundaries of the permitted daily trading band, so a weak print mechanically creates room for the spot to drift lower within the session. Worth distinguishing is whether the move tracks broad dollar strength, in which case the trade-weighted basket stays stable and the signal is passive, or whether the fix leads the dollar, which carries a heavier policy read-through and has in past episodes fed through to Asian FX peers and to offshore-onshore spread behaviour. Follow-ons are the direction of subsequent fixings relative to models, any state bank presence in the onshore session, and the CNH-CNY spread as the cleanest gauge of how much depreciation pressure the fixing regime is absorbing.
