The daily fix is the PBoC's primary signalling instrument for the yuan, and the information content sits less in the level than in the gap between the set mid-point and the consensus model estimate, since the models replicate the countercyclical and basket mechanics while the authorities retain discretion over the residual. A fix set weaker than models project, as here, has historically been read as tolerance for depreciation or a reduced willingness to lean against dollar strength; a fix set stronger than expected is the mirror image, signalling defence. In past episodes of sustained fixing bias in one direction, the pattern has tended to persist across consecutive sessions rather than reverse, and the cumulative drift of the bias has mattered more to the offshore spread than any single print. The tells are the CNH-CNY spread, which widens when the fix fails to anchor offshore expectations, whether state banks appear on the offer in the afternoon session, and how the fixing bias interacts with broad dollar direction, since the authorities have historically preferred to move with the dollar rather than against it. The follow-ons are tomorrow's fix relative to the new estimate and any change in forward reserve requirement or cross-border flow parameters, the standard escalation sequence when verbal and fixing signals prove insufficient.
