Tour the PlatformA fix materially weaker than the modelled estimate is the PBoC's standard signalling channel: the daily mid-point anchors the onshore trading band, and the gap versus consensus is read as the countercyclical intent, in this case tolerance for depreciation rather than resistance to it. A fix landing close to the prior day's level, while well off expectations, fits the pattern of managed drift rather than a step devaluation, a distinction that has historically separated orderly CNY weakness from the episodes that forced broader EM and risk repricing. The usual sequence in such stretches is CNH trading at a widening discount to CNY, firmer dollar fixing expectations the next session, and scrutiny of whether state banks appear on the offer in USD/CNY. Worth watching are the offshore-onshore spread, any shift in fix-versus-model gaps over coming days, and CFETS basket behaviour, since authorities have tended to defend the basket even while letting the bilateral rate move. As a signal this is directional rather than decisive; single fixes have rarely marked turning points on their own.
