PBoC sets USD/CNY mid-point at 6.7840 vs exp. 6.7261 (prev. 6.7829)
The daily fix is the PBoC's primary signalling instrument, and the gap between the set midpoint and the modelled consensus is where the signal sits rather than in the level itself. A fix materially weaker than estimates has historically been read in one of two ways: either an accommodation of broad dollar strength, letting the fix track the basket rather than fight it, or a passive tolerance for depreciation pressure, and the distinction is usually resolved by the persistence of the pattern across successive days rather than by any single print. On previous occasions when the fix came in consistently on the weak side of expectations, the sequence has tended to be CNH weakening first, the offshore-onshore spread widening, and attention shifting to whether state banks appear on the offer side of dollars in the onshore session. The countervailing pattern is a firm-side surprise, which has typically signalled defence and has often preceded tighter offshore liquidity conditions. Worth noting is that the fix barely moved from the prior day, so the surprise against expectations says more about the model basket's dollar assumptions than about an abrupt policy shift. The follow-ons are the next several fixes for direction of bias, the CNH-CNY spread, and any counter-cyclical factor commentary.
