PBoC sets USD/CNY mid-point at 6.78822 vs exp. 6.7430 (prev. 6.7900)
The daily fix is the PBoC's primary signalling instrument for the yuan, and the gap against the modelled consensus is the read, not the level itself. A print above survey, as here, is classically interpreted as the authorities either tolerating depreciation pressure or declining to resist it, though the fixing coming in marginally firmer than the prior session complicates a single-direction read; in past episodes of this kind the tell has been persistence, with a run of fixes on the same side of expectations carrying far more weight than any one print. The countercyclical factor, never formally disclosed, is the usual mechanism through which the fix diverges from where models place it, and desk convention is to infer its presence from exactly this kind of deviation. The follow-ons are established: where the onshore spot trades relative to the fix within the daily band, whether state banks appear in the afternoon session, the offshore-onshore spread, and the CFETS basket rather than the bilateral rate, since the authorities have historically framed stability against the basket. A sustained sequence of weaker-than-modelled fixes has tended in the past to bleed into regional FX and to revive scrutiny of capital outflow proxies.
