PBoC sets USD/CNY mid-point at 6.7917 vs exp. 6.7595 (prev. 6.7898)

What it means

The daily mid-point fixing is the PBoC's primary signalling instrument for the exchange rate, and the information content here lies in the deviation from the modelled consensus rather than the level itself. A fix materially weaker than surveyed expectations is read as the authorities either validating offshore pressure on the yuan or declining to lean against it; on past occasions, consecutive weaker-than-modelled fixings have tended to be interpreted as sanctioned depreciation and have fed through to offshore CNH, regional Asian FX peers and, at the margin, broader risk sentiment via the capital flight channel. The distinction worth drawing is between a one-off weak print, which usually fades, and a sequence of them, which has historically preceded a sustained drift in the spot toward the weak edge of the trading band. The countervailing tell is whether the state banks appear in the spot market selling dollars, which has on previous episodes capped the move and signalled the fix was noise rather than intent. Worth watching is the gap between onshore spot and the fixing, the CNH-CNY spread as a gauge of offshore pressure, and whether the next fixings persist in this direction. The transmission to the dollar index and Asian rates runs through the regional FX complex rather than through any direct channel.
