PBoC sets USD/CNY midpoint at 6.7195 vs exp. 6.6756 (prev. 6.7172)

What it means

The signal in the daily fixing is not the level but the gap between the published midpoint and the modelled consensus, and a deviation of this size sits well outside the noise that day-to-day estimation error produces. On past occasions when the fix has come in consistently weaker than models implied, the read has been that the authorities were either accommodating depreciation pressure already in the market or deliberately guiding the rate lower, and the two are distinguished by what the dollar basket did overnight: a fix that merely tracks a stronger dollar is mechanical, one that deviates from the basket is discretionary. The established pattern is that a single weak fixing is discounted, while a run of them in the same direction is treated as a policy signal and tends to pull the offshore rate with it. Tells worth noting are the spread between the offshore and onshore rates, whether state banks appear selling dollars near the top of the trading band, and how far spot trades from the midpoint within its permitted range. Historically, when deviation has become a trend, verbal guidance and adjustments to the toolkit used to lean against one-way moves have followed. The next several fixings, not this one, determine which case this is.
