Context

Overnight reverse repo injections are the PBoC's routine open market operation, and single-operation headlines of this kind carry almost no signal in isolation; the rate on the operation is typically unchanged, and the size mainly reflects the day's maturing operations plus seasonal liquidity demand such as tax payments, government bond issuance, and quarter-end or holiday cash hoarding. What has historically mattered is the net position over a run of days: persistent large net injections into quarter-end have been read as smoothing, while persistent net draining in size has at times signalled tolerance for tighter money market conditions, visible in the 7-day repo fixing and DR007 relative to the policy rate. The distinction worth drawing is between liquidity management, which this is, and policy stance, which is expressed through the 7-day reverse repo rate, the MLF, and reserve requirement changes rather than through daily volumes. Follow-ons are the fixing of money market rates against the operation rate and whether a heavy issuance calendar is forcing the larger gross sizes. As a routine operation, this is context, not a decision.
