PBoC will offer lenders a record amount of up to CNY 1tln in overnight funds each day over the upcoming holiday period, according to Bloomberg
Large scale temporary liquidity provision around major Chinese holidays is standard PBoC practice: cash withdrawal demand and payment settlement needs spike into the break, and the central bank has historically pre-funded the system through short tenor operations rather than allow overnight rates to gap.

The headline elements are the overnight tenor and the record size. Overnight money, rolled daily, is the most conservative form of support and gives the PBoC full control over withdrawal once the holiday passes, so this reads as bridging a seasonal drain rather than a shift in the policy stance. That said, the size of the facility relative to prior holiday operations is itself a signal: bigger pledged cash leakage, thinner interbank liquidity, or a desire to anchor front-end funding rates while longer operations are restructured, and past episodes of outsized seasonal support have sometimes preceded or accompanied adjustments in the standing toolkit. The distinction that matters for interpretation is between this and the longer tenor channels: record overnight provision alongside unchanged MLF and reverse repo rates is routine plumbing, whereas the same size paired with rate or tenor changes would carry policy content. The follow-ons are the actual take-up against the offered cap, the behaviour of the pledged repo fixings and the 7-day reverse repo rate through the period, and whether the liquidity is drained cleanly on the other side of the holiday, which is the historical pattern.
