Releases of this kind sit in the second tier of the US data calendar, behind ISM, and their standalone market effect has historically been modest and brief, confined to short-dated rates and the dollar unless they rhyme with a broader run of soft prints. The more informative read is the internals, new orders, employment, prices paid, which in past episodes have told the market more about demand and pipeline inflation than the headline diffusion number. Worth noting that a drop of this size from a historically stretched reading often reflects mean reversion in survey responses rather than a genuine turn in activity, a pattern seen repeatedly when regional gauges print well above the national surveys. The tell is whether the next ISM manufacturing print corroborates the cooling; when the regional Feds and ISM diverge, ISM has tended to win the repricing. As a single secondary release, this is context for the easing-path debate rather than a driver of it.
