PRIMER - Today’s Fedspeak includes: Barkin

Newsquawk Staff ·

15:00BST/10:00EDT - Fed’s Barkin (2027 voter, neutral) will participate in a fireside chat. Speaking to the WSJ last week, Barkin said it as a close call whether rates are sufficiently restrictive to bring inflation down. He acknowledged the case for further tightening, but suggested the softer June inflation readings allowed time to assess whether the current setting is adequate. Barkin noted inflation was moving unevenly through the economy, with business-to-business price rises proving stickier than consumer-facing ones, and cautioned that inflationary pressures may still be working their way through retailers’ balance sheets. He also is sceptical that the labour market had tightened meaningfully.
