PRIMER - Today's Fedspeak includes: Waller

Importance
Level 1
  • 16:00BST/11:00EDT: Fed’s Waller (voter, hawk) will participate on a policy panel. Speaking in May ahead of Fed Chair Warsh’s first policy meeting in June, Waller said the Fed should remove its easing bias from the policy statement, and described any near-term rate cuts as "crazy" given inflation is broadening and persistent. Waller’s comments were seen as hawkish, and emboldened market pricing for a rate hike this year. Meanwhile, Warsh’s first Fed meeting subsequently reinforced expectations for a hike, signalled a sharper focus on inflation, less forward guidance (the Fed did drop its easing bias), and more reliance on market signals. Elsewhere, any commentary on reserve bank proposals will be eyed after Senate Banking Committee’s Elizabeth Warren urged Waller to halt work on a proposal to consolidate back-office functions at the Fed's 12 regional reserve banks, arguing the plan appears inconsistent with federal law and could erode central bank independence. Warren requested a reply by 16th July.
