  • Pharmaceuticals sales +2%, +7% CER.
  • Diagnostics sales flat, +4% CER.

Commentary

  • Growth driven by strong demand for Xolair, Hemlibra, Ocrevus, Phesgo and Vabysmo, while Diagnostics growth was supported by core lab and pathology demand, partly offset by healthcare pricing reforms in China.

What it means

The print is a nine-month sales update rather than full results, the format Roche has long used between half-year and full-year reporting, so granularity is limited to divisional revenue with no margin or cash flow detail; historically the equity reaction to these interims has been muted unless guidance moves, and here the reaffirmation of mid-single-digit sales and high-single-digit core EPS growth at constant exchange rates keeps the story on its established track. The recurring fault line is the gap between reported and constant-currency growth, with pharma at 2% reported against 7% CER illustrating the translational drag that has characterised Swiss large-cap reporting in periods of franc strength; the CER figure is the one the buy side models against. The growth drivers named, Ocrevus, Hemlibra, Vabysmo, Xolair and Phesgo, are the familiar cohort that has been offsetting biosimilar erosion of the legacy oncology franchise, the central swing factor in the Roche thesis for several years, and the key question is whether that offset remains sufficient as the older books continue to decay. The China pricing reform drag on Diagnostics is a known headwind rather than new information, but it bears watching given how much of the division's emerging-market growth assumptions sit there. Note also the ticker confusion in the tags: ROP is a US software name, whereas this is Roche on the SIX. The next markers are full-year results with margin detail and any update to the late-stage pipeline and LOE commentary that typically accompanies it.
