Context

Since sanctions and the price cap regime were imposed, Urals has traded at a deep discount to dated Brent, with Indian refiners the principal buyers of displaced Russian barrels; a move toward parity marks an extreme compression of that discount and, on past form, reflects the buyer's leverage rather than strength in the crude itself. The mechanism here is refining economics: when margins are weak, the discount a refiner demands to run sanctioned, logistically complex crude widens, and if offers are nonetheless being quoted near parity it signals either that Indian demand has stepped back or that sellers are testing the floor, two cases that resolve differently in freight and insurance costs layered on top of the headline differential. The watch items are the actual traded level versus the offer, the state of Indian crude runs and product cracks, and whether alternative suppliers in the Middle East adjust official selling prices in response. Episodes of this kind have tended to show up first in the Urals-dated spread and in ton-mile demand for the shadow fleet before any move in outright Brent. As a sources-based report on offers rather than concluded deals, the signal is directional on differentials, not on flat price.
