South African Consumer Confidence (Q3) -13 (Prev. -19)
South African consumer confidence is a thin, quarterly survey with a long record of sitting in negative territory even through expansions, so direction and distance from the prevailing range matter more than the level itself.

An improvement of this size is a normal rebound move for the series rather than a regime signal; readings of this kind have historically tracked the inflation and rate cycle, petrol prices, and the state of household credit, and tend to lead retail sales and credit growth data rather than the currency. The rand's sensitivity to domestic survey data is limited, with global risk appetite, terms of trade and the local rate differential doing most of the work in the FX. The distinction worth drawing is between a bounce off depressed levels, which this resembles, and a sustained move toward neutral, which in past episodes has coincided with easing cycles and load-shedding relief. Follow-ons are the next retail sales and private credit prints and any accompanying commentary on the sub-indices, which separate durable-goods willingness to spend from the economic outlook component. As a low-tier release, the read is directional context for the consumer story rather than a trading event.
