South African Leading Business Cycle Indicator (Aug MM) 1.1% (Prev. -0.8%)
What it means
A swing of this size in the leading indicator, from contraction to a modest positive, fits the pattern of a series that is volatile month to month and rarely traded on its own; it is compiled largely from components already in the market, including building plans, new vehicle sales and commodity price terms, so the signal content on the day is thin. Historically the read-through to the rand and to SAGBs has come not from the print itself but from what it implies for the growth path into the central bank's next decision, with a run of improving leads having tended to support the case for patience on easing rather than to move pricing outright. The distinction worth drawing is between a one-month bounce and a confirmed turn in the cycle: single readings of this kind have frequently been revised or reversed, while a sustained sequence has preceded shifts in both the growth consensus and the rates curve. The follow-ons are the coincident hard data, mining and manufacturing output and retail sales, and whether the leading index's upturn is corroborated there. As a second-tier release in a market driven more by global risk appetite and terms of trade, the standalone weight is low.
