South Korean Foreign Exchange Reserves (Aug) 442.28B (Prev. 427.95B)

A monthly reserve print of this kind is a routine release, and the month-on-month rise is the sort of move that in past episodes has often owed as much to valuation effects, gains on non-dollar holdings when the dollar softens and on bond holdings when yields fall, as to outright intervention.

Context

The distinction worth drawing is between valuation-driven changes and genuine spot purchases, since the latter signal active smoothing of the won and tend to be visible in onshore FX flow and in the authorities' forward book disclosure that follows with a lag. Korea's central bank has a long track record of leaning against both sharp appreciation and depreciation, and its stated policy has been to disclose intervention data periodically, so the follow-on is that disclosure alongside any commentary from the FX authorities. Reserves near the upper end of their historical range leave the adequacy debate, coverage of short-term external debt and import months, comfortably dormant. As a data point it is second-tier for the won; the dominant drivers remain the broad dollar and the rate differential against the US.
