South Korean Foreign Reserves (USD)(Aug) 442.3B (Prev. 428.0B)

A monthly reserve build of this size, roughly 14bn against the prior print, is well beyond what valuation effects alone typically generate, since euro and yen translation plus bond portfolio moves rarely account for more than a few billion in a month.

Context

In past episodes, jumps of this magnitude in Korean reserves have usually traced to some combination of portfolio income credited to the account, intervention-related flows being unwound or redeployed, and dollar sales by the authorities in the opposite direction being sterilised back into the stock. The read-through for won is indirect: a rising reserve stock is generally associated with periods when the Bank of Korea is not defending the currency, whereas drawdowns have historically marked active smoothing of dollar strength. The breakdown worth watching is the securities versus deposits split and any accompanying commentary on valuation adjustments, which distinguishes genuine accumulation from bookkeeping. Korean reserves sit in the middle tier of Asian stockpiles, so the print matters more as a signal of FX management posture than as a standalone market mover; KRW and short-dated KTB reaction to reserve data has tended to be modest and short-lived.
