Spanish CPI Prel (Oct YY) 4.9% vs. Exp. 4.9% (Prev. 4.9%)

What it means

An in-line flash CPI of this kind typically passes without a lasting footprint: the preliminary print has historically been prone to modest revision at the final release, and it is the harmonised HICP measure rather than the national CPI that feeds the ECB's policy calculus, so the national figure tends to trade as a soft signal on the HICP due alongside it. A flat year-on-year rate at this level usually reflects energy and regulated-price base effects doing the heavy lifting in the headline, which places the information content in the core and services components when the detail arrives. Spanish inflation has in past episodes run above the euro-area aggregate while growth also outperformed, a combination that has kept Madrid a less decisive input to the Governing Council debate than the bloc's largest economies. The transmission channel for a genuine surprise here would be the front end of the Eonia curve via repricing of the ECB path; with the print on consensus, that channel stays dormant. Worth noting are the follow-ons: the HICP flash, the euro-area aggregate that follows within days, and any breakdown showing whether services disinflation is stalling, which has been the swing factor in recent prints of this type.
