Context

A second consecutive re-acceleration in Spanish headline CPI, now above expectations, fits the pattern seen across eurozone economies when favourable energy base effects roll out of the annual comparison: headline rates have historically stepped higher on this mechanical channel even where underlying momentum is steadier, and markets have learned to look past the optics to the core and services components for the true signal. Spain's flash print has tended to act as an early read on the eurozone HICP release that follows, so a beat here has in comparable episodes fed through to upward revisions of bloc-wide expectations and pressure on the front end of the EGB curve, with BTP-Bund and Bonos-Bund spreads reacting more to the core detail than the headline. The distinction worth drawing is between a base-effect-driven headline rise and a broadening in services inflation, since only the latter has historically altered the ECB's reaction function. The follow-ons are the core and harmonised breakdown in this same release, the other national flash prints due before the aggregate, and whether ECB officials reference the prints in subsequent commentary.
