Context
A managed acceleration of lira depreciation fits the standard pattern for a crawling regime that has been holding the currency above its clearing rate: reserves are burned defending the crawl, the overvaluation builds, and the authorities eventually choose faster depreciation on their own terms rather than a disorderly adjustment later. The distinction worth drawing is between a controlled steepening of the crawl, which tends to compress the carry appeal of the long-TRY trade gradually, and the loss of control it is designed to pre-empt, which historically has re-priced the currency, local rates and sovereign spreads in gaps rather than increments. The actors and their form matter here: Turkish policy credibility on FX has swung sharply with changes in the central bank and finance ministry leadership, and each orthodox spell has previously been tested by political pressure for growth and by the inflation pass-through that faster depreciation feeds. The mechanism to watch is the pass-through itself, since a quicker crawl lifts imported inflation and forces a choice between tighter policy to validate it or erosion of the real rate that made the carry trade attractive. Tells include the reserve position and net international reserves trend, the pace of daily fixes versus the prior crawl, and any shift in the deposit dollarisation ratio, which in past episodes has moved before the official stance does.
