Context

Turkish balance of payments prints of this kind sit at the centre of the post-orthodoxy rebalancing story: a swing of this size from near-balance to a multi-billion surplus fits the pattern seen when tight policy, compressed domestic demand and a weak lira choke off imports, the same sequence Turkey has run through in prior tightening cycles. The usual transmission is twofold: a narrower external deficit reduces the FX reserve drain and has historically been supportive for the lira and for Turkish external spreads, while also feeding the central bank's disinflation narrative. Two caveats have mattered in comparable episodes: seasonality, with tourism inflows flattering summer and early-autumn prints, and composition, since a surplus built on collapsing imports of investment and consumption goods reads differently for growth than one built on export strength. The follow-ons worth noting are the reserve accumulation data and whether the improvement persists into the seasonally weaker winter energy-import months, which is where prior episodes of this kind have tended to give back ground. Directionally, the print reinforces the rebalancing case that has underpinned the local rates and FX carry trade.
