Context

Turkish preliminary trade data are released monthly by the trade ministry ahead of the finalised TurkStat figures, and the prelim print has historically tracked the official release closely enough that desks treat it as the effective number. The read for the lira runs through the external balance rather than the headline level: exports at this scale against Turkey's structurally larger import bill, driven by energy and gold, still leaves a wide deficit, so the transmission is whether the sequential improvement narrows the current account gap that the central bank's reserve rebuild depends on. Episodes of strong export prints have tended to support the disinflation and normalisation narrative only when paired with falling gold imports and a stable energy bill; an export rise alongside widening imports has historically been dismissed. The distinction worth drawing is between goods exports momentum, which matters for the tradeables sector and the industrial cycle, and the financing side, which is what actually moves the currency and the sovereign spread. Follow-ons are the import and full trade balance prints, the current account release, and whether the central bank reads the external data as consistent with its easing or holding stance.
