A week-on-week decline of this kind is consistent with either FX sales to smooth the currency or valuation and gold-price effects, and the distinction matters: market participants have historically stripped out gold revaluation and swaps with domestic banks to get at net and net-excluding-swaps reserves, which are the figures that carry the signal. Sustained drawdowns in gross reserves during episodes of lira pressure have tended to precede either tighter policy or heavier reliance on macroprudential tools and protected deposit schemes, and Turkish monetary history shows the central bank oscillating between orthodox tightening and unorthodox reserve management depending on the political cycle. The immediate follow-ons are the lira's behaviour against the dollar, the deposit-dollarisation trend in the banking system, and whether the central bank's next rate decision frames the reserve position as a constraint or a buffer. Reserve data of this kind is a slow-moving solvency and credibility read rather than a front-end trigger, and the established pattern is that it matters most when it confirms an existing trend rather than when it surprises in isolation.
