Two oil supertankers were reportedly hit by projectiles in the Strait of Hormuz, reports suggest (details light)

Tour the PlatformAttacks on tankers in or near the Strait of Hormuz have a well-established template: an initial crude risk premium driven less by actual supply loss than by freight, war-risk insurance, and rerouting costs, since the waterway carries a large share of seaborne oil and even the threat of disruption reprices the voyage before any barrel is lost. The established pattern in comparable episodes is a front-end-led bid in crude, a widening of prompt timespreads, and a jump in tanker rates and insurance premia, with refined product cracks following where Gulf refinery or export flows are implicated. The material distinction is between harassment and closure: past episodes of vessel strikes, seizures, and mine incidents have historically faded within sessions once shipping resumed, while only a credible threat to transit itself has sustained a durable premium. Attribution is the immediate question, since state involvement versus proxy action has tended to determine whether the response stays rhetorical or escalates to escorts, sanctions, or strikes on infrastructure. The tells to watch are confirmation of the vessels' flags and ownership, whether war-risk premia and VLCC rates actually reprice, any suspension of transits by owners or insurers, and the response from the naval presence in the region. Given the light detail, the headline risk runs both ways until attribution and the scale of damage are established.
