Uber (UBER) and Wayve are rolling out their RoboTaxi service in London from Thursday, although there will be a human driver behind the wheel to takeover if needed, according to WSJ
Robotaxi launches of this kind have tended to arrive in heavily supervised form first, with safety drivers and constrained service areas, and the gap between a supervised pilot and a driverless commercial service has historically been measured in regulatory approvals rather than in months of operations.

The read-through for Uber splits two ways: as a distribution partner for third-party autonomy it reinforces the asset-light aggregation strategy, but each such launch also tests how much of the ride-hail take rate survives when the driver cost line is eventually removed by a partner rather than by Uber itself. The London setting matters because UK regulators have been building a framework for automated vehicles, making it one of the earlier European jurisdictions where a commercial trial is feasible, and the precedent in prior pilots elsewhere is that headline launches draw scrutiny from local transport authorities and labour groups before they draw revenue. The tell for the autonomy thesis is the pace at which the safety driver requirement is relaxed and the service area expanded, not the launch itself. For the equity, the established pattern is that single-city pilot announcements reprice the autonomy narrative at the margin; sustained moves have followed disclosed ride volumes, unit economics, or a decision to remove the supervisor.
