Context
This series tracks the average rate on existing mortgage lending rather than the price of new money, so an unchanged print is the modal outcome and carries almost no information about the policy path on its own. The meaningful distinction for the gilt market is between this lagged stock measure and quoted new-business rates, which are set off swap pricing and move first; the stock rate follows with a long lag as borrowers roll off fixes. Historically, flat readings here have mattered only insofar as they confirm the slow pass-through of Bank Rate into household cash flows, the channel through which policy eventually bites consumption, rather than telling anything about the next MPC decision. The more informative follow-ons sit in approvals data, effective rates on new lending published by the Bank, and the two-year swap, which has been the driver of repricing at the short end. As a standalone release, this is a non-event by precedent.
