UK BoE MPC Vote Unchanged 6/ vs. Exp. 6/ (Prev. 6/)

An unchanged vote count in line with consensus is the least informative kind of MPC outcome: the split itself carries the signal, and an unrepeated distribution tells the market the internal balance of the committee has not shifted since the prior meeting.

Context

On the MPC, the precedent is that movement in the vote split, particularly among the swing members who sit between the entrenched doves and hawks, has historically been the leading indicator of a change in the policy stance, with a stable count usually preceding a stable decision path. What matters more than the headline tally is the composition behind it: which members dissented, in which direction, and whether any prior dissenter has migrated toward the majority, since that migration has tended to precede the eventual move by a meeting or two. The gilt and sterling reaction to an in-line count is typically muted and short-lived, with the front end reverting to pricing driven by the accompanying statement language and the next round of wage and services inflation data. The follow-ons are the minutes' wording on the balance of risks, any shift in the guidance sentence, and subsequent speeches from the members who sit closest to the fence.
