The HMRC payrolled employment series is a relatively young indicator, prone to revision and seasonally noisy, so desks have historically treated single prints with caution; what has moved gilt front ends and sterling is the trend across successive releases, which this extends rather than breaks. The mechanism runs through the Bank of England's reaction function: persistent payrolls contraction has tended to weigh on the wage growth and employment components the MPC watches, easing the case for holding restrictive policy and steepening market pricing for cuts at the short end. Worth noting is the series' divergence from the LFS employment measure, which has carried well-documented quality problems of its own, leaving HMRC data as the cleaner read on hiring. The follow-ons are the accompanying pay figures in the same release, the next LFS unemployment print, and how MPC commentary absorbs a cooling labour market against still-elevated services inflation.
