UK M4 Money Supply MoM (Jun) M/M 0.8% vs. Exp. 0.2% (Prev. 0.1%)
Broad money is a second-tier UK release and rarely a durable market mover on its own; the established pattern is for sterling and short sterling to acknowledge a surprise of this size and then re-anchor to the Bank's communication and the harder activity and inflation prints. Where M4 has historically earned attention is as a corroborating input to the credit impulse: episodes where money growth accelerates alongside lending to households and firms have tended to be read as easing financial conditions at the margin, which the MPC has on past occasions flagged in its own assessment of demand persistence. The relevant distinction is between a one-month jump, which the series produces regularly given its volatility, and a run of firmer prints, which is what has moved the policy debate. The composition matters more than the headline: growth concentrated in household deposits reads differently from expansion in corporate or financial-sector balances. Follow-ons worth noting are the accompanying lending and mortgage approvals data from the same release and whether Bank speakers reference broad money conditions in subsequent commentary.
